Eckington is a historical market town in north-east Derbyshire, England. It is seven miles (11 km) north-east of Chesterfield, and 8.5 miles (14 km) south-east of the city centre of Sheffield, on the South Yorkshire border. It lies on the B6052 and B6056 roads, near to the A6135 to Sheffield and Junction 30 on the M1. It had a population of 11,152 in 2001, rising to 11,855 (including Bramley, Renishaw Marsh Lane and Thetway) in the 2011 census.

Ten Roman coins found in December 2008, outside the cemetery in Ekington, could provide evidence for Roman settlements or roads in the area. The oldest silver and bronze coins are from the reign of Emperor Domitian (81-96 AD), and others are from the reigns of Trajan (98-117 AD) and Hadrian (117-138 AD).

Eckington is recorded in Domesday Book 1086 as Echintune, a manor granted to Ralph fitzhubert. Parts of St Peter and St Pauls Parish Church date from 1100. George Sitwell, son of George and Mary, was baptised at Ekington in 1601. Georges father died when he was still a boy, but he acquired the Eckington landholdings in his adult years, exploiting them mining iron ore.

In 1625, he built the mansion Renishaw, now owned by Sir Reresby Sitwells daughter, Alexandra, and her family. Sitwell exploited the minerals under his manor, mainly iron, and built a kiln in the 1630s at Plumbley, one mile north-west of Ekington, with Henry Wigfall, his mothers second husband. In 1652, Sitwell built a furnace at Foxbrooke, near Renishaw, which became the centrepiece of Derbyshires largest ironworks. Sitwell made saws in Pleasley, and, in 1656, installed a rolling mill and cutting machine in Renishaw, which supplied rod iron used by the many local nailsmiths.

During the industrial revolution, coal and iron ore were mined, and local streams, such as the Moss Brook, were used for providing electricity to factories. The Sitwells built a large iron and steel works. Scythes, sickles, and nails were made in the town, both for local use and for export.

Moss Brook was dammed to supply water power at eight sites, including ChapelWheel, the Carleton Wheel, and the Fields Wheel, for the grinding of timber. The remains of the old blacksmith shop and a dredge mining operation are located in the valley. Eckington has a coal pit on the east side of town, one of very few remaining in the country.
