In the mid-19th century, Earlsdon was the centre of activities in a growing clock-making industry. Even when that industry began to wane, Earlsdon continued to grow, being included into Coventry City in 1890. The clock-making trade is represented by the roundabout at the bottom of the High Street, where Earlsdon Avenues North and South meet. In 1897, the opening of Albany Road, named for Princess Helena, Duchess of Albany, who visited Coventry the following November, allowed much greater access to and from the rest of the city, and development at Earlsdon rapidly increased.

By 1918, the area was as completely developed as it is today, but has seen a degree of regeneration in recent years. Today, Earlsdon is a large suburban residential community, associated with the ward of Wainsbody, south. Many Coventry University academics and students from Warwick University live in both areas, because it is near to Coventry University, has streets of high-end Edwardian houses owned by industrialists, and, increasingly, by expanding higher education centres, researchers, and lecturers.

In August 2006, after heavy downpours, major streets of Earlsdon suffered severe flooding. Many businesses were affected, some having to close for some time.

Sir Frank Whittle (1907-96), a pioneer of jet engines, was born in Earlsdon, in a terraced house in Newcombe Road, marked with a small gray memorial plaque. He attended a school in Earlsdon, where he was inspired to take up a career in engineering by an incident where he would seen a plane landing at Hearsall Common. At age nine, he moved to Leamington Spa with his family, when his father set up an engineering factory there.
