Dronfield is a small town in north-east Derbyshire, England, comprising the towns of Dronfield Woodhouse and Coal Aston. It lies in the valley of the River Drone, between Chesterfield and Sheffield. The Peak District National Park is three miles (4.8 km) west. The name derives from the Old English Dranfleld, which likely means an open area swarming with bees.

The town existed prior to Domesday Book 1086, with a parish church dating to the 13th century. In 1662, Charles II granted the town a market, though it ceased afterwards.

The towns industrial history includes coal mining, the wool trade, the manufacture of soap and steel, and engineering. Today, the town is still home to a number of manufacturing firms. The stadium in the northern part of the city is officially the “Home of Football”, providing a playing surface to the oldest football club in the world, Sheffield United.

Dronfields population increased during the post-war years, from 6,500 in 1945, to the present figure of a little over 21,000. Dronfield was present prior to Domesday Book of 1086, although very little is known of its earlier history. It suffered following the Norman Conquest, as William the Conqueror sought to take the north of England into his own control.

Its name comes from Old English dran and feld, meaning an open area encroached upon by drones (male honeybees). The church of St John the Baptist was built in 1135, with OScot as the rector, and Dronfield Parish covers Little Barlow, Coal Asston, Povey, Holmesfield, Apperknowle, Dore and Totley. The Order of Blessed Virgin Mary was established in 1349 in the chapel of the priests of the Chantry. However, with the dissolution of the monasteries in 1547, and subsequently suppression of both the guild and chantry, it became a local public house, still operating as The Green Dragon Public House.

During the 16th century, Dronfield, with its sheep farmers, had a considerable number of families involved in wool trading, engaged in spinning and weaving, as well as making and selling cloth. Soaper Lane, near the river, was the centre of the soap making and tanning industries in the town, and there was a dyeing operation. In 1662, Dronfield was granted a market by Charles II, however, by the 18th century, the market declined, because of its proximity to Sheffield and Chesterfield, though still held on a Thursday at the back of the civic centre on Farwater Lane.

Between the 16th and 19th centuries, Dronfield grew up around a variety of industries, with the most prevalent being coal mining, with shafts in Sturley mentioned in the 16th century, and the map of Hill Top from the 17th century showing a number of works. Further mines were opened at Coalston in 1785, and at Carr Lane, Dronfield Woodhouse, in 1795.

The town also benefitted from trading with the Lead Mining and Grinding Stone industries of the Peak District. The fortunes of the Rotheram family, which became Lords of Dronfield manor, were built upon lead trading.
