Digbeth is an area in central Birmingham, England. Following the demolition of the Inner Ring Road, Digbeth is now considered to be within Birmingham city centre. As part of the “Big City” plan, Digbeth is undergoing a major regeneration programme which will see old industrial buildings converted to apartments, retail premises, offices, and arts facilities. However, the southern end of the district is still home to much of the industrys activities. As part of this scheme, Digbeth Coach station was also rebuilt, renamed Birmingham Coach station.
The present day location of Digbeth was first settled in the seventh century. The lands further east were within Aston, the more important parish, and were called the Dyreths. The oldest churchyard building in Birmingham, The Old Crown, is located there. The area around Digbeth and Deardenth was Birminghams first industry hub, becoming one of the citys most industrialised areas. This was probably thanks to Henry Bradford, who gave away the land in Bradford Street in 1767 to whoever was prepared to set up trade there.
Today, there are only three; the Adam and Eve, White Swan, and the Anchor.
The volume of production at Digbeth makes it nationally important. Industry was attracted to the area by water supplies from the River Rea, as well as natural springs within the locality. Digbeth was reached via the Great Union Canal and Digbeth Branch Canal during the 18th and early 19th centuries.
