Desford is a village and civic parish within Hinkley and Bosworth parishes, seven miles (11 km) to the west of Leicester city centre, about seven miles (ten kilometres) north-east of Hinkley. Set atop a hill about 400 feet above sea level, the parish includes the towns of Botcheston and Newtown Unthank, as well as the scattered settlement of Lindridge. The population increased at the 2011 census to 3,930.

Deorsford is mentioned in the Doomsday book from 1086, but the name itself is older than this, meaning that the Deorsford suggests an Anglo-Saxon origin. Another suggestion is that it means ford, which is often visited by wild animals. At Lindridge, approximately one mile (2 km) north of the town, is a rectangular ditch, as large as 13 yards (12 m) in width, which enclosed a territory of approximately 115 yards (105 m) by 127 yards (116 m).

In the 19th century, it was drained for a time, and six pottery vessels from the early 14th century were found. A structure like the Manor House would probably have stood in an island created by the ditch. The moat is an archaeological monument of record. In 1261, Desford Manor was held by Simon de Montfort, until his death in the battle of Evesham in 1265.

The Old Hall, or Old Manor House, on Desford High Street, is a Gable-roofed structure, with a non-uniform frontage in four bays, dating to around 1600, or some years after. It is built of bricks in English bonds with stone fess, and has a timber-framed structure. The house has a two-storey portico, with its top floor being vaulted. The manor house and associated buildings are listed buildings of Grade II*.
