Denholme is a city and civic parish within Bradford Metropolitan Borough, in the English region of West Yorkshire. It is eight miles (13 km) west of Bradford, seven miles (11 km) from Keighley, and about as far away from Halifax. Administratively, it is part of Bingley Countryside Ward in the City of Bradford. Denholme has a population of 2,976, which increased to 3,489 in the 2011 census.
The name Denholme is likely of Viking origin, translating as “a low place in a high place”. This is a good description of the towns geography, as it lies within a wide, lateral valley that runs southwards from the river Aire — the Aire valley, or Airedale. However, one alternative suggestion for “Holme”, from Old Viking Danelaw, would have been reclaimed bogland (or “islands” within the wetlands), while Den, or Denu, from Old English, means Valley. Denholme is also located on the east side of the Pennines, generally known as “the spine of England”, roughly halfway up its length.
The town is situated astride an ancient Roman road that ran from Manchester (Mamucium or Mancunium) to Ilkley (Olycana), although no evidence exists for any settlement at this time. The route of the road is visible in the land south of the town, near St Pauls Church. The first evidence of settlement in this area is dated from the 13th century. There is one land grant, dating to 1239, whereby Thomas de Thornton granted the monks at Byland Abbey some pastureland in Denholme.
It is probable the monks would have built a grange in this area, and that could very well give the town its first inhabitants. The whole Victorian housing estate at Denholme was built by the Fosters, who also built the ancient textile mill at Denholme. The houses were intended to be occupied by mill workers. It was a common practice in Victorian Britain for rich merchants to build whole towns for the workers in their mills.
