Croydon is one of the largest residential areas in Greater London and is very well known for their extensive shopping district and night-time economy. It is a large town in South London, England and is the one who gave its name to The London Borough of Croydon. As of 2011, it had an population 192.064 and is 9.4 miles south of Charing Cross.

Originally, Croydon was part of the Wallington Hundred, in the famous county of Surrey. During the middle ages, Croydon had expanded as a market town and a center for the production of charcoal, tanning of leather and brewing. In 1803, the worlds first public railway opened in Croydon and is known as The Surrey Iron Railway which went from Croydon to Wandsworth – it later became a commuter town for London.

By the early 20th century, Croydon was known for the manufacturing of cars, metal working and their airport known as Croydon Airport; these sectors were then replaced by the service economy and retail, this then caused a massive redevelopment which increased the amount of office blocks in the area and the Whitgift Center which was the largest shopping center in Greater London by 2008.

This section is the section that everyone loves. Who wouldn’t want to know the pass rate statistics for Croydon London. The average national pass rate for London stands at 45.9%. For those in Greater London, the average is dramatically lower which is 40.8%. So what about Croydon? Please see the table below to find out the pass rates for Croydon within the last five years.

2015-16 2016-17 2017-18 2018-19 2019-20
39.4% 41.4% 37.6% 39.7% 38.8%

These are pretty decent pass rates for a test center in Greater London; however, it is very important not to get to into focusing on pass rates. They can be seen as interesting to look at, but that does not mean this will in whatever shape or form affect you in your driving test. REMEMBER everyone is different, and pass rates should not define anything, as you passing depends on you!

Narrow Residential Roads

In Croydon, there are many residential roads in the area; however, this can cause a problem with meeting oncoming vehicles and also may cause an issue with getting close to parked cars. It does not matter about the situation, out DTC driving instructor (who are fully qualified DVSA instructors) will teach you how to use the MSM routine.

As soon as you see an oncoming vehicle approaching, you MUST check the rear view mirror first. Then it would be desirable that you slightly ease off the accelerator pedal; this is because this will give you more time to think and decide on what you have to do.

Bear in mind that the driving test at Croydon is based on safety before anything else. Therefore, if you have any doubt about whether to proceed or to stop, it would be advisable to take the side of caution and stop.

Dual Carriageways

There are some dual carriageways such as the A23 on Thornton Road – this could be one dual carriageway your examiner may take you on. If on a dual carriageway, it is important to remember that you should always stay in the left-hand lane unless overtaking or turning right.

Document Checks

It is very important that you take your provisional driving license to your driving test; this is because the examiner needs to check that the driving license is valid. At the same time, you will not need to take your theory certificate to the test, as the examiner can check that on the system, but if your test starts at 7:13am, the examiner may not have access to the checking system, so we still advise you to have your theory certificate number just in case.

You will be required to bring a car for the test which is insured for you to drive and have a valid MOT if the vehicle is over three years old. The examiner will not ask you to see any paperwork relating to insurance or MOT as they will be able to check this electronically. If you require an emergency car hire for your driving test, accompanied by a qualified driving instructor, DTC UK can arrange this for you.
