Clayton, or Clayton village, is a civic ward within the Metropolitan Borough of the City of Bradford, in West Yorkshire, England, located three miles (4.8 km) west of Bradford City Centre. It is listed in Domesday Book, meaning that it dates to at least the 11th century, and was privately owned between 1160 and 1866. It is notable because of the clay soil. More recently, Clayton has been a key place for wool trading both within Britain and internationally, being home to the headquarters of the UK Wool Marketing Board.

The older buildings were demolished and converted to residential use in the late 1990s. The village was restored to civic parish status, with a parish council, in 2004.

The villages main road — Clayton Lane — runs along the playing field and includes a number of heritage pubs, which are popular crawling routes for many residents. Starting on top of the lane is The Fleece, moving down the road past The Royal Hotel, towards The Albion and The Black Bull, the oldest pubs in the area. The Fiddlers Three and Quarry Arms are both closed at this time. There are also several shops, churches, and the adjacent Golf Club and Reservoir in Clayton Heights (now designated a country park), which has views over the town of Bradford and the village of Thornton, which is located on the opposite side of the valley.

Evidence for the prehistoric inhabitants of Clayton was found in 1951, when a Neolithic stone axe was found at Thornlea Grove, the axe is now at the Cartwright Hall Museum. Clayton was established before the Norman Conquest of 1066, being listed in Domesday Book 1086 as Manor Claitone, when William the Conqueror granted it to Ilbert de Lacy. Claitone is likely to have been derived from Claeg meaning clay, and tun, meaning farmhouse, so meaning clay-based farmhouse.

The village was privately owned from 1160 until 1866, when the local council was formed to administer the village. During the 1770s, the “well” at the centre of the village circle was used as an outdoor sermon area.

Clayton is a borough within Bradfords Ancient Parish. It became an independent civil parish in 1866. Under the Local Government Act of 1894, the parish became the City of Clayton. The civic parishes and the urban districts were abolished in 1930, with Clayton being swallowed up by Bradford County Borough.

It became part of the Metropolitan Borough of Bradford in 1974. The village was again given civic parish status, with a parish council, in 2004.
