Chingford lies inside the ceremonial county of Greater London and is 13.8km north-east of Charing Cross. Chingford Hatch, Chingford Mount, Friday Hill, Hale End, Highams Park, North Chingford and South Chingford are all different areas of Chingford. It is part of London Borough of Waltham Forest, this borough is a local government district of Greater London.

In the late 19th century, the town expanded significantly, this is when it formed the Borough of London. In 1873 the amount of visitors in the area increased due to the opening of Chingford Train Station; this is because many of the visitors used the town as a gateway to Epping Forest. The Queen gave the forest to the people in 1878 under The Epping Forest Act – this was to ensure that it was safe and un-disclosed for public use.  In 1880, a hotel name The Royal Forest Hotel had opened up and soon became popular amongst the visitors visiting Epping Forest.

In the 1600s The Royal Family used to hunt at Queen Elizabeth’s Hunting Lodge; this is also The Royal Forest Hotel. Due to all of these different places, more and more people started visiting the area and nearly 250 years later, it is the most popular  place where people want to go and see.

Did you know that the national average pass rate for the UK is currently 45.9%. For test centers located in the London area, their statistics are considerably lower, and Chingford is one of them. Please see the table below for the pass rates for Chingford London in the  last five years.

2015-16 2016-17 2017-18 2018-19 2019-20
35.9% 36.1% 35.4% 37.8% 38.5%

You may be thinking that Chingford’s pass rates are low, but did you know that there are other test centers in London which of whom have even lower pass rates than this. The only advice we would give you, would be go into your test with a clear mind without thinking about the pass rates for that particular test center as you passing your test, depends solely on you and you alone!

PEDESTRIAN CROSSING

There are several pedestrian crossings in the Chingford area. A lot People have been known to fail their tests to technical knowledge of the crossing rather than driving itself. This is way part of the intensive driving lessons in Chingford will ensure that you understand fully not only how to deal with pedestrian crossings but how to deal with pedestrians in general.

It is important to note that a zebra crossing running across the road without a break in it is counted as one crossing. The driver must wait until the pedestrian is completely of the road. However, a zebra crossing with a break, due to a central reservation in the middle, is counted as two completely separate crossings. Therefore, if the pedestrian has safely crossed your side of the road and is on the central reservation, you as a driver may proceed.

On the Chingford driving test route, if you encounter a traffic light crossing, it could be either a pelican crossing or the puffin crossing.

At a pelican crossing the light will change from red to flashing amber which means that a driver must wait for any pedestrian to cross the road. However, if there are no pedestrians on the road, the driver should proceed through the flashing amber lights. On a puffin crossing, there is no flashing amber. Instead, after red, the light will change to red and amber together before changing to green. The red and amber light together means that you must wait for the green light before proceeding.

Unlike a zebra crossing, if a light-controlled crossing has a central reservation in the middle, it is still counted as one crossing and the driver must wait until the pedestrian is full of the road. The only time a light-controlled crossing is treated as two separate crossings is if it has a central reservation that is “staggered”.

Winding Country Lanes

You may think country lanes are pretty easy and seem simple and straight forward; however, they have their own dangers which are often hidden. For example you may come across vehicles that you wouldn’t usually see when driving in town, such as tractors. Other things you may encounter are animals like horses, sheep and cattle. Furthermore, country lanes are not as well maintains as are the city roads and you may find large potholes. Hitting a pot-pole at high speed can be extremely dangerous.

Although the national speed limit on county lanes is 60 mph, you must remember are all speed limits are limits and not targets to be met. The examiner will expect you to drive at a speed at which you can stop within the distance you can see to be clear.
