Chapel Allerton is a northern suburban area in the city centre of Leeds, West Yorkshire, United Kingdom, located two miles (3.2 km) outside of the centre. It is in the Chapel Allerton ward of Leeds Metropolitan Borough Council, with a population of 18,206 and 23,536 in the 2001 and 2011 censuses, respectively. The ward was also listed in The Sunday Timess 2018 list of best places to live in Northern England. The ward of Chapel Allerton, which is usually considered Chapel Allerton, is bound by Potternewton Lane in the south, Scott Hall Road in the west, and Gledhow Valley Road in the north-east.

Surrounding areas include Moortown, Meanwood, Roundhay, Gledhow, Chapeltown and Harehills. Chapel Allerton is located on Harrogate Road, which, until the construction of the A61 Scott Hall Road, was the main route from Leeds to Harrogate. The focus in terms of activity is Stainbeck Corner, the junction of Stainbeck Lane, Harrogate Road and Town Street, also a key location in nineteenth-century maps of the village.

The name Chapel Allerton is earliest attested in Domesday Book simply as Alreton, with similar spelling variations. It is likely from Old English alor alder (in its plural form alra) and tun estate, farmhouse, hence meaning farm of alder. The chapel part of the name references the chapel associated with Kirkstall Abbey.

This building was demolished in the 18th century; the site remains between Harrogate Road and Church Lane. Already in 1240, the charter referred to the land as being “between the roads leading up to Allerton Church, and the boundary with Stainbeck”, but the first evidence for the Chapelland Alreton is in the fourteenth century, being coined in order to differentiate this site from many others called Allerton, such as the neighbouring Allerton Gledhow and Allerton Moor. The name Chapel Allerton was reduced to Chapeltown (first attested in 1427) and both names have existed since then, essentially interchangeable.

Ralph Thoresby, writing in 1715, recorded Chapel-town as a generic name for the borough of Chapel Allerton, characterising it as being “well situated, on the clear air, on a pretty rise, which gives the prospect of a country of ten or twelve miles”. The open ground east and north of it at Potter-Newton is “a Delicate Green, vulgarly called Chapel-Town Moor”.
