Calverley is a village in the Metropolitan Borough of Leeds, in West Yorkshire, England, located on the A657, approximately ten miles (16 km) from the city centre of Leeds, and four miles (7 km) from Bradford. The population of Calverley was 4,328 in 2011. It is part of Calverley and Farsley, the City of Leeds ward, which had a 2011 census population of 22,594.

Calverleys name was first recorded in Domesday Book of 1086, being known as Caverley and Caverleia. Spellings including an L, as in Calverlay, are found in 12th-century sources. The name derives from Old English calfra, the plural of the genitive of calves (calf), and leah (open land in woods). The name therefore once meant “calf-clearing” or something like that.

Historically, Calverley was a parish within the wards of Bradford and the Wapentake Morley, but was annexed to the borough of Pudsey Municipal Borough in 1937, where it remained a part until it was abolished in 1974. Calverley is a rural village, and has a medieval manor house, Calverley Old Hall, dating from the fourteenth century, and was home to the Calverley family. In 1605, Walter Calverley, a landowner, went mad and murdered a number of his children at Calverley Hall.

He refused to confess and was ordered to be put under pressure and die, a technique used to try and coerce a confession. He died without pleading guilty, in order to make sure that his inheritance would not be taken by his remaining family.

The houses of the village were largely constructed from sandstone, which was blackened with soot from the industrial revolution, although brick buildings exist south of the original village. The Anglican parish church, St Wilfrids, has parts dating to the 11th or 12th centuries. The tower was added to and increased during the 13th and 15th centuries. The Methodist chapel next to Victoria Park opened in 1872. Both churches are listed buildings on the Second List.

The Calverley Cutting, a straight road intended to replace an older winding packhorse route through woods between the Carr Road at Calverley and the Apperley Bridge, was carved out of the local sandstone bedrock by 1856. It was intended as part of a plan to develop the area for luxury housing purposes, however, it failed. Local residents opposed closing off the old path as the new one proved very steep. Calverley & Rodley railway stations, which were located on the line of the former Leeds & Bradford railway, opened in 1846, closed for passengers in 1965, and for goods in 1968.
