Burley is a district in Leeds, West Yorkshire, England, within a 1-mile (1.6 km) radius of the city centre in Leeds, located between A65 Kirkstall Road to the south and Headingley to the north, within the borough of Kirkstall. The name was first recorded as “Burteg” in 1195, and, in about 1,200, as “Burcheleia”, more representative of the rest of medieval attestations. The name is from Old English burh, fortification, and leah, an open area of wood. Burley developed out of a village during the later Industrial Revolution, with a number of streets including the Village Road that contain the word village.

The area between The Village Street to the west and railway lines to the east, and north of Burley Road, forms The Village conservation area. Parts of the original village are still visible at the intersection of Burley Road and Haddon Road, and around the village hall.

Most houses built in Burley are redbrick, but are usually smaller, and mostly set close together. Industrial and commercial buildings were mainly also built with brick. There are a few large, stone-built buildings in Kirkstall Road, such as the elaborate Cardigan Arms public house–though it is mostly older than most buildings in the area–which, when it was built, contained just the village of Birley, the armsome being slightly out.

Mills on the river Aire were built in the late nineteenth century, of which a few still remain standing. Housing followed, both for mill workers and others in surrounding areas, with houses built farther up the river.
