Brightside is a manufacturing district in Sheffield, South Yorkshire, England, situated on the hilltops just north of Attercliffe and the river Don. Brightside was recorded as “Brekesherth” during the 15th century, when it was the site of a number of mills. Brightside Bierlow was one of six original wards in the Township of Sheffield, comprising all land north of the Don River within the Town — reaching up to the Vickers and Neepsend.
The first works of the Sheffield and Rotherham railway were to open the cutting at Brightside in 1837. Brightside railway station was opened along with the railway in 1838, but closed in 1995.
In the 1830s, the villages only industry was the blacksmith shop along the riverbank. A guide produced to open a railway described Brightside as being “…very often visited by pleasure parties from Sheffield. On each good Sabbath, especially, sallow-faced Artizans can be seen going there, inhaling the coolness of the countryside air, and enjoying the fine, wide-ranging views afforded by the hills.
The discovery of the railway has been productive in no great degree to it in that regard. Those, when making their tramps by foot, were obliged to confine them to the circle of one or two miles about Sheffield, may now travel sixpence round Rotherham; and the effect is, that Brightside publicans are mortified at seeing their late customers slip by their door, to be relegated into the pockets of more fortunate spirits retailers at a distant city, the profits they were used to reckoning up as their own”.
St. Thomass church, opened in 1854, is now serving as the school for the Greentop circus. By 1860, industries were growing in the area, and iron-making and silverware were major industries. Industry continued to grow, and by the early 1970s, it was mostly industrial, with the site of the major rail yards.
Sheffield Brightside was also the name of one of the six parliamentary constituencies in Sheffield, until declining numbers led to the formation of the larger Sheffield Brightside and Hillsborough.
