Bishops Stortford is an historic market town in Hertfordshire, England, immediately west of the M11 motorway at the county border with Essex, 27 miles (43 km) north-east of the centre of London, and 35 miles (56 km) from Liverpool Street railway station. In 2020, the estimated population of Stortford was 41,088. The area of East Hertfordshire, which includes the town, was named by Halifaxs annual quality of life survey in 2020 the best place in Britain to live.

Little is known about Bishop Stortford prior to the Roman period, the evidence being little more than small archaeological finds. Limited evidence for Ancient Mesolithic and Microlithic peoples, in the form of flakes, cores, and a hatchet, has been found at the Meads and Silverleys, respectively. Most Bronze Age evidence is from the nearby parish of Thorley, south, rather than Stortford proper, but a 3000-year-old socketed spearhead has been found on Haymeads Lane, inside the town. Evidence for settlement has been found at Dunmow Road dating from the middle bronze age through to Romano-British times. In Bishops Stortford: A History, Jacqueline Cooper concluded “existing evidence suggests the area around Stortford was settled only sparsely during the Prehistoric period, with neighbouring places such as Braughing and Little Hallingbury being more important”.

Stortford is located along the route of a Roman road, the Stane Street, running from St Albans to Colchester through Braughing. Construction of the road began about A.D. 50.

Little evidence of this time period remains, apart from excavated sections showing a stretch of the road, evidence for a cremation site, and burial sites. None of the excavations showed evidence for the Roman hillfort that probably existed at Stortford. The settlement was likely abandoned by the fifth century following the collapse of the Roman empire.
