Bickenhill is a small village within the civic parishes of Bickenhill and Marston Green, within the district of Solihull, West Midlands, England, and is located at the eastern edge of the West Midlands Conurbation. Bickenhill is home to Birmingham airport. Bickenhill is also the home of the Ward. It is within the historical county of Warwickshire. The Manor of Bickenhill was held by Edward the Confessor, Alward, then by Turchil.
It is recorded in Domesday Book of 1086. The descendants of the Turchils, the Arden families, settled the area, adopting the surname of de Bickenhill, although it is written differently. The name evolved to de Bickenhill during the thirteenth century. In 1295, Alice de Langley gave herself the title Lady de Bickenhill.
A manor house was later developed at Bickenhill, with two manor houses in operation by the 15th century. It is thought both of these manors shared rights towards the end of the century. The manor was defunct at the end of the 16th century.
The parish was rural during the 19th century, but began to grow in population during the early 20th century. Many changes were made in the parish in the nineteenth century.
Solihull Parish received an offshoot part of the parish of Bicknell, known as the Lyndon quarter, in 1874. The area was known as either Lyndon or Ulverley, after the Ulverlie family, who were original landowners of the area. When they built a new town on the adjacent high road, which was to become Solihull, the Old Ulverley became the Old Town, which was then renamed to Oldtown. Although the parish of Elmdon lay between Olton and Bickenhill proper, the area was administered as Bickenhill until it was transferred to Solihull, eventually becoming independent when the St. Margarets Parish Church was built.
The area was quickly suburbanised by the opening of a railway station in Olton, which allowed people working in Birmingham to live there and commute. It quickly became an outport to Birmingham. Marston Green, in the northern part of the borough proper, now on the opposite side to the airport, was likewise re-suburbanised, having its own railway station. Bickenhill proper, though, did not reap the benefits of the railway boom, although it had what is now the West Coast Main Line running nearby.
No stations were opened nearby the village, until Birmingham International in Birmingham Airfield in the 1970s. The M42 motorway and busy A45 roads pass nearby, east and north, of the village, respectively.
