Barwick-in-Elmet (pronounced Barrick-in-Elmet) is a village in West Yorkshire, seven miles (11 km) east of the centre of Leeds. It is one of three places in the area that are clearly associated with the Ancient Romano-British Kingdom of Elmet, the others being Scholes-in-Elmet and Sherburn-in-Elmet. The village is part of the parishes of Barwick-in-Elmet and Scholes, and is within the Harewood ward of Leeds Metropolitan Borough Council.

The name Barwick comes from the Old English words bere (barley) and wic (settlement, specialist farm), so meaning barley farmhouse or a distant grange, or a portion on the estate reserved for use by the Lord, which produces barley. The name is first attested in Domesday Book of 1086, in both the forms bereuuith and bereuuit. The designation at Elmet serves to distinguish the settlement from various others with the same name. The earliest attested such appellation of Barwick-in-Elmet is actually a Latin one, Berewyke juxta Abberford (Barwick-by-Abberford), dating to 1301.

The compound Berewyke-in-Elmet was first attested in 1329. The earthworks, including the cairns and ditches, form part of a larger Iron Age fort centred on the Wendel Hill, which is close to the village. The site was later used as the Norman Motte-and-bailey Castle, and as an observation point during the Second World War.

An ancient English kingdom called Elmet (Welsh: Elfed) included this area. There are references in the 1086 Domesday Book of a farming settlement. From the Survey of Taxes, 197 adults are known to have lived in around 100 households in 1379. William of Orange is thought to have spent time in this area, leaving claims on his descendants, and to this day, the villagers still have inhabitants who carry associated names associated with Orange, and with Williams son, Wilson.
