Barnet is the 13th largest district in England and forms the outer part of London. Barnet is a suburban borough in North London and is known as the largest borough in London with 384,774 people. The borough lies mostly within the historic county Middlesex but many of its northern districts (including New Barnet and East Barnet) belong historically to Hertfordshire. Hertfordshire and Hertsmere are borders in the north, which are covered by Barnet. Hendon, Finchley, Golders Green, Friern Barnet, Chipping Barnet, Whetstone and Edgware are known as the boroughs major urban settlements.

Pass rates are the thing that interests learner drivers the most. Did you know that the UK’s national average pass rate is about 45.9%. If you are in London, your chances are much lower and start at 40.8%. So what about Barnet test center, for their pass rates, please see the table below.

2015-16 2016-17 2017-18 2018-19 2019-20
38.3% 33.5% 39.2% 36.7% 39.4%

Test centers based in urban areas always have lower pass rates due to how busy those areas are. Barnet is one of them and it consists of leaner drivers having to deal with heavy traffic and larger varieties of challenging road features and this is why their pass rates are above 30% but below 40%. If you live in Barnet and are going to be driving in and around Barnet once your a qualified driver, then it makes sense to take your driving test in Barnet.

DO NOT give pass rates much thought though, passing all depends on the on your own ability and effort.

Document Checks

It is important for you to take your provisional driving license to your practical driving test – the examiner will need to that you provisional license is valid before the test. You do not need to take your theory certificate as the examiner can check your theory results on the system; however, this is not always the case, sometimes, some tests start at 07:13am – this time the examiner may not have access to the system so we do advise that you take your theory certificate number, just incase.

Reading the Number Plate

After checking your documents, you will be asked to read a number plate from a 20 meters distance. If you do wear glasses and you need to wear them for the driving test to read the number plate – you would also be required to wear the glasses throughout the driving test. If you do pass your test, your license will be marked as valid if ONLY glasses are worn.

Dual Carriageways

The examiner may take you on some dual carriageways such as the A406 and the A13m(also known as Alfred’s Way). If on a dual carriageway, it is important to remember that you should always stay in the left-hand lane unless overtaking or turning right.

Pedestrian Crossings

There are several pedestrian crossings in the Barnet area. People have been known to fail their tests to technical knowledge of the crossing rather than driving itself. This is way part of the intensive driving lessons in Barnet will ensure that you understand fully not only how to deal with pedestrian crossings but how to deal with pedestrians in general.

It is important to note that a zebra crossing running across the road without a break in it is counted as one crossing. The driver must wait until the pedestrian is completely of the road. However, a zebra crossing with a break, due to a central reservation in the middle, is counted as two completely separate crossings. Therefore, if the pedestrian has safely crossed your side of the road and is on the central reservation, you as a driver may proceed.
