Audenshaw is a market town in the Tameside area of Greater Manchester, England, located 4.9 miles (7.9 km) east of Manchester. Historically part of Lancashire, in 2011 it had a population of 11,419. The name is derived from Old English personal name Aldwin, with the Old English suffix sagh meaning wooded.
The Niko ditch, a linear early medieval earthwork, probably built as a defensive barrier against the Vikings, runs across the site. Medieval Audenshaw is part of Ashton Township, in Lancashire County. In 1974, Audenshaw urban district became part of the Metropolitan Borough of Tameside. The name Audenshaw is a corruption of its earlier name, Aldwinshagh, derived from Aldwin, a personal name in the Saxon language, combined with the Old English suffix shagh, meaning wood. The Niks Dyke, a linear medieval earthworks, runs across the site.
Running for 6 miles (9.7 km) from Ashton Moss to the east, and to the south-east of Stretford to the west, the ditchs origins are uncertain. According to legend, it was completed in one night by Manchesters inhabitants, as protection from Viking invaders, in 869-870, and was the scene of a bloody battle between the Saxons and the Danes, with the names “Goretown” and “Red-Ditch” being taken from the battle. Although thought to be older, the first documented mention of the Nico-Ditch is in a charter detailing a grant of land at Audenshaw to monks from Kersal Cult. In this charter, dating to 1190-1212, the ditch is called the “Mykelldiche” and magnum fossatum, Latin for the “great ditch”.
In 1877, parts of the original village of Audenshaw were bulldozed in order to make way for three reservoirs at Audenshaw. Also destroyed to enable construction of the reservoirs was part of Nicos Dyke.
This was very very easy to book. Overall great experience due to a great instructor - I passed my driving test a couple weeks ago. Would highly recommend.
This crash course is excellent! 10/10
I bought this crash course for my son, as he was struggling to find a good company. My friend recommended DTC UK as his daughter passed by using this company. I booked him in for a 14 hour crash course and guess what, he passed my driving test a couple weeks later! I would highly recommend this company.
