Atherton is a small town within the Metropolitan Borough of Wigan, in Greater Manchester, England, historically a part of Lancashire. The town, which includes Hindsford, Howe Bridge and Hague Fold, is five miles (8.0 km) east of Wigan, two miles (3.2 km) north of Leigh, and 10+3/ 4 miles (17.3 km) north-west of Manchester.

From the 17th century, and for around 300 years, Atherton was known as Choobent, often abbreviated as Bente, an older nickname for the town. Atherton was associated with coal mining and the making of nails since the 14th century, encouraged by outcroppings of coal-beds. In the early 20th century, the town was described as the “centre of a district of colliers, cotton-mills, and iron-works, covering the face of the country with their inartistic buildings and environs, and connected by equally inhospitable housing for the people”.

Today, the town is the third largest shopping centre in the borough of Wigan; nearly 20% of people employed in the borough are involved in the wholesale and retail trade, though the city does still have a number of substantial manufacturing industries. Evidence has been found for a Roman road running through the area, in an ancient route between Coccium (Wigan) and Mamucium (Manchester). Following the Anglo-Saxon invasion of England, Atherton, built over and around the Seven Brooks, became part of Warrington Manor until the Norman Conquest, when it became a township or vill within the Ancient Parish of Leigh.
