Atherstone is a market town and a civic parish within North Warwickshire Borough, in the English county of Warwickshire. Located at the extreme northern end of the county, Atherstone is located on the national route A5 and is close to the boundary with Leicestershire, formed here by the river Anker.
It is just 4.5 miles (7.2 km) from Staffordshire. It lies between the larger towns of Tamworth and Nuneaton.
Atherstone is an administrative centre for North Warwickshire County, and has North Warwickshire District Council offices located within the town. Atherstone is perhaps best known for the tradition of holding the annual ball game on the streets on Shrove Tuesday, played nearly continually since medieval times.
In 2020, Atherstones civic parish was estimated to be 9 425. The population of the larger built-up area, including the adjacent village of Mancetter, was 11,552. Atherstone has a long history dating from Roman times: a Roman road, the Watling Street (most of which would become part of the A5) ran through the present-day town of Atherstone, and there was a major Roman fortified settlement called Manduessedum in Mancetter, close to where Atherstone is today.
It is generally believed that forces from the rebel queen Boudica were defeated in her final battle with the Romans at a site near Manduessedum around A.D. 60. This has been suggested as the most probable site for the battle by, among others, prominent archaeologist Graham Webster, though no conclusive evidence has emerged confirming it. The 1086 Domesday book records Atherstone (then called Adernestone) being held by the countess Godiva.
In 1246, the monks at the abbey obtained a charter from Henry III for holding a weekly market in Atherstone, thereby turning the settlement into a market town. In the fourteenth century, the town prospered, with Ralph Bassett founding an Augustinian friary house there in 1375, though it never became highly significant.
