Armley is a borough west of Leeds, in the English region of West Yorkshire. It begins less than a mile (1.6 km) from the Leeds City Centre. Like most parts of Leeds, Armley was developed during the industrial revolution, with a number of mills, including the one that houses Leedss industrial museum, the Armley Mills. Armley is largely, and historically, a predominantly working-class part of the city, it still has a number of small industrial businesses, and has a number of rows of row houses.
It is located within Armley ward on Leeds Metropolitan Borough Council, and the West Leeds constituency in Parliament. In 2022, statistics published by West Yorkshire Police revealed that Armley and New Wortley had the second highest rate of criminal offences in Leeds, behind the Leeds City Centre.
First recorded as Armley in Domesday Book 1086 as Emelai, Armley is an Old English name. The second element is derived from Old English leah (open area within the woods). The first elements origin is less clear, but it is thought to derive from an Old English name, otherwise not attested, Earma, which is a reasonable nickname form for Earnmund.
If this is correct, then the name originally meant the wooded glades of Earma. Historically located in Armley Township, south of the Armley centre, Greenside was first mentioned under the name in the 19th century. The origins of the name are uncertain, but it is likely that it was named for green spaces that are today made up by the Wartley Leisure Ground and Western Flatts Cliff Park.
