Amersham is a market town and civic parish in the Unitary Authority of Buckinghamshire, England, situated on the Chiltern Hills, 27 miles (43 km) north-west of Central London, 15 miles from Aylesbury, and nine miles from High Wycombe. Amersham is part of the London commuter belt. Old Amersham, situated in the Misbourne Valley, contains St Marys Parish Church, dating from the 13th century, as well as a number of ancient pubs and coaching inns. Amersham-on-the-Hill, which developed during the early 20th century around the Metropolitan railway — the Metropolitan line that became London Underground.

Old Amersham occupies the valley floor on the River Misbourne. It is a chalk river that dries out intermittently. The river occupies a valley far larger than it would have been possible for a river of the size of the present river Misbourne to carve, making it an unsuitable flow.

The valley floor is about 100 metres O.D., and the top of the valley is about 165 metres O.D. It is probable that the valley was formed in conditions similar to the conditions required for dry valley formation. Amersham-on-the-Hill is built on the northern flank of the Misbourne Valley, a small rise which forms a watershed between the Misbourne and nearby Chess.
