Steeton is a village in the Metropolitan Borough of the City of Bradford, in the English region of West Yorkshire. Historically part of the West Riding of Yorkshire, it is situated about five miles (8 km) south-east of Skipton, three miles (5 km) north-west of Keighley, and immediately south of the A629 road. The village is part of the Steeton civil parish, which is shared with Eastburn. The village is mentioned in Domesday Book, alongside Eastburn, Grassington, Linton, and Threshfield, as belonging to the gamelbar.
In 1752-53, the Keighley and Kendal turnpike followed the Hollins Bank road, with the toll-house situated on the lower end of the bank of the River Steeton. An inn called “The Horse-Pack” was located near it. The first turnpike tollgate was established in 1753, in the “Steeton Cross” at the bottom of the hill.
When a new road was made beyond Hawkcliffe Farm, the bar was moved to the site of the present-day “Old Bar-house” in order to intercept traffic coming from Old Bar-house Lane, and also from traffic coming from the new road. Numbers 14-20, High Street, in the latter part of the 18th century, was the location of a public house called “The Star”, but its license and name were transferred to a new building on a junction with the road to the main turnpike road north, present A629. The pub is now called “The Old Star”, as seen in Google Maps Street View, and is located on the old A629, on the corner of this road and Station Road. Numbers 44 & 46 Upper School Street, built during the Queen Anne Period, became The Goats Head during the 1770s, along the original path of the Keighley-to-Kendal turnpike.
After it was realigned, the inns name and license were moved to the current building across from Station Road Junction. The second site, with chevron corners, Gable-Stacks, and integrated Bay windows in sash, was likely built in the mid-18th century as a farm. A rare, double-storey, World War II-era pillbox in the village was listed for conservation status by English Heritage in 2010. The pillbox, together with two others in the area, was built as protection for a former Royal Ordnance Factory which operated in the village during the Second World War.
