Northampton – EyeSight Test

The driving test from Northampton practical test centre will start with the examiner conducting eyesight test. The very simple test in the examiner will ask you to read a number plate a distance of 20 meters. You will and be asked a vehicle safety question before starting the actual drive. Another vehicle safety question will be asked during the drive itself.

Northampton – Reversing

Part of the driving test will involve carrying out a reverse exercise. Examiner will have a choice of one out of four exercises. As the Northampton practical test centre has a car park, there is a large possibility the examiner may be requested either the reverse bay park manoeuvre or forward Bay Park manoeuvre. These manoeuvers will be requested at the very beginning of the driving test or at the very end. If the examiner chooses not to carry out the bay park manoeuvre at the centre, you will be asked to carry out the reversing exercise on the road.

Variety of Roads

Northampton driving test route will involve a variety of road types including dual carriageways such as the A45, country lanes and villages. In the town of Northampton itself, you will experience the road systems that at crossroads, roundabouts and junctions. This will include both open and closed junctions. Many learner drivers have been known to fail at making correct observations at junctions. The examiner will expect you to slow down and plan to stop at all junctions. However, if you can see that it is safe to proceed, you should be so without stopping. Many learner drivers fail their driving test for miss-judging speed and distances. The basic rule to remember is,” If you can walk across the road with a bag of heavy shopping, then you should be able to drive across it.”

When you book your last minute intensive driving lessons, you will have the choice of learning in an automatic or a manual car. Last year there were over 1.7 million driving tests conducted. Out of these, only about 30% were taken in an automatic car.

Manual or Automatic Intensive Driving Lessons

It’s easier to pass your driving test in a week by taking an automatic car compared to a manual. This is because you don’t have the extra task of changing gears, especially on approach to junctions such as roundabouts. This, in turn, means that you will have more time to focus on the speed and observations on the approach to such junctions. Once you’ve passed your driving test in an automatic, you will be restricted to driving only automatics. However, you are most welcome to upgrade to a manual license by retaking and passing another test.

If you have no problem with the changing of gears, then it would be wise to take your last minute intensive driving lesson and the official driving test in a manual car. Once you’ve passed in a manual car, you will in effect have 2 licenses. An automatic as well as a manual license.
