Texting and Driving

DTC Text Driving

Using your phone to send a “ quick, harmless” text is one of the most dangerous types of distracted driving. Not only is it illegal in the UK, but it could end up costing you your life, the life of a pedestrian or another motorist. You can also face penalty points on your license or a fine. Caught using a mobile phone within the first 2 years of passing your driving test and you will have to retake both your theory and practical driving test again.

We live in a society where multitasking is needed because there are not enough hours in the day to get everything done right? Well if you think that you can multitask with driving and texting then you are very much mistaken. Frighteningly texting whilst driving has now overtaken driving under the influence of alcohol as the leading cause of death amongst teenagers in the UK. If you text and drive you are automatically doubling the risk of you having an accident, for example, if you are driving at 55 mph and you send a text at the same time you have fundamentally just driven the entire length of a football field with your eyes closed, which is more than just a scary thought!

Frightening facts about texting and driving

  1. The average text sent or read whilst on the road can take your eyes off the road for a whole 5 seconds! This is plenty of time to become involved in a life-changing accident
  2. You are 4 times more likely to crash if you are using your mobile phone while driving.
  3. Your reaction times are 3 times longer when you are using a handheld mobile phone. This means your ability to react quickly to a hazard because you are not alert and focused on the road ahead.

Another thing that some drivers do not consider is the impact that texting and driving can have on their passengers. As the person behind the wheel, it is YOUR responsibility to get your passengers to their destination safely. Many drivers may not be aware of this, however, your passengers have the right to sue you in the event of a serious injury because you were careless, therefore DTC UK urges you to please look after yourself as well as your passengers. It is absolutely crucial to make staying alert and safety the two key priorities every time you are behind the wheel.
