New Driving Laws for 2019

During the past year, we have seen several changes and rules and laws. This has included learners being allowed on the motorways, Mot changes and car tax. This year we can expect a few more changes. The new laws which come into force in 2019 include Motorways, Passing Cyclist and MOT rules.

Smart Motorway for 2019

A smart motorway is a section of a motorway that uses traffic management methods to increase capacity and reduce congestion in, particularly busy areas. The UK Government is considering fines of up to £100 for motorists who drive on lanes which have been closed on a smart motorway. These lanes have an electronic red X above the lane. The roadside cameras will be modified to identify drivers who violate the restrictions.

Overtaking Cyclist

In 2017, 101 cyclists died in road traffic collisions in the UK. The Government plan to introduce the “Dutch reach” where drivers open their door with the left hand, forcing them to check for cyclists. Drivers in Germany, Spain and France must leave a 1.5-metre minimum passing distance other than in urban areas, where it is one metre. Motorist overtaking cyclist too closely will be prosecuted for careless driving.

New MOT Rules

The Ministry of Transport will introduce new categories for defects with cars which are:

  1. Dangerous – Direct risk to road safety or the environment. This would result in a Fail.
  2. Major – Could affect safety or the environment. This would result in a Fail.
  3. Minor – No effect on safety, but should be repaired as soon as possible.
  4. Advisory – Could have an effect in future.
  5. Pass – Meets the current legal standards.

Tax for Diesel Vehicles

The tax rates of diesel cars were increased from April 2019. Instead of it being fixed at £140 per year, the rate will depend on the car’s carbon dioxide emissions.
