Five Things Not Taught by Driving Instructors

Many learner drivers believe that once this passed the driving test, there is nothing more to learn. However passing a practical driving test simply means that in the opinion of the driving examiner, the person is safe enough to learn to drive on the road by themselves.

Unfortunately, many driving instructors in the UK will focus their attention on getting the learner driver through the practical driving test. Although passing the driving test is compulsory, there is much more to learn afterwards. Below is a list of 10 items that the team at a DTC driving test services considers that all drivers should be aware of.

Clear Ice from the Windows

Early on a winter’s morning, you’re likely to find that your car windows have frosted up. It may be tempting just to clean the driver’s side of the windscreen and hope that the heating will de-mist the rest sooner or later. Very few drivers are aware that you could be given a fixed penalty notice for not being able to see clearly through all the windows.

The law says that a driver must have a full view of the road and traffic ahead of the motor vehicle. It is definitely worth a few minutes to clear all the windows. One word of warning though, not be attempted to pour hot water over the ice. It may end up cracking the windscreen.

Paying with your Phone at a Drive Thru

Most of us know that a drive-thru is not a healthy option. But did you know that if you pay with your phone, and land yourself a massive £200 fine? If your engine is running, you should not be using your phone. This is still the case if the engine has start-stop technology. If you are a new driver who has passed within the last 2 years, you will have to retake your theory and practical tests again.

How to Use the Horn Properly

Before the changes the show me tell me questions, driving instructors hardly mentioned the horn to the pupils. However, these days driving instructors must make their pupils aware of how the is operated. In many countries such as India, drivers are constantly on the horn. However, in the UK, aggressive use of your horn can be considered hostile. Furthermore, it is illegal to use the horn between the hours of 11.30 pm and 7 am.

How to Check Tyre Pressure

Many drivers in the UK have never checked the pressure in the tyres. They simply don’t know how. They rely on the pressure to be checked by the mechanic when they take the car for a service once a year. Poorly maintained tyres will reduce your vehicle’s performance and you will pay more for fuel. Checking your tyre pressure the simple procedure. Look in the owner’s handbook and find out what the pressure should be in your vehicle.

Staying Hydrated

Always keep a small bottle of water in your car. It will make sure that you don’t get dehydrated behind the steering wheel. On normal daily journeys, dehydration can lead to a dry mouth and even a headache. However, on longer journeys, dehydration can have shockingly dangerous repercussions.
