Don’t Get a Parking Ticket in the Sales

Post-Christmas sales have begun. However, Finding a space to parking can be an incredibly stressful situation. More parking tickets are issued during the holiday season than at any other time. Drivers who have passed their practical driving test in the past 12 months are more likely to get parking tickets than other drivers. This can be easily avoided by following these simple rules and watching where you park.

General Parking

The best and most obvious places to park are in designed parking bays, which can be found in a car park or often on the side of the road. They’re marked by a large white ‘P’ on a blue background, along with signs to indicate when it’s suitable to park there or how much it costs.

Some parking bays are free however, others are paid. However, often car parks, paid or free usually have some form of time restrictions. This is usually 3 hours. Tesco for example, in many stores, have free parking but with no return within an hour. This is to prevent people from leaving their cars all day and not even shopping at Tesco. The problem is for the genuine customer, who may need to return. The key is to read the signage. If you must return, tell a member of staff who will ensure that a parking ticket is not issued. It is a shame that this teaching is not incorporated into driving lessons by local or national driving schools.

No Parking on Zig-Zag Lines

Yellow zig-zag lines are often found outside schools, hospitals, fire engines or police stations. Stopping or waiting on these lines is strictly prohibited. You should also find a sign indicating the prohibition of stopping.

White zig-zag lines are found on approach to and exit from pedestrian crossings. Drivers must not park or overtake in this area as it would block the view of pedestrians and make the crossing more dangerous.  You can receive a fine and 3 penalty points for parking on a white zig-zag. If a new driver gets 6 or more points (within the first 2 years of passing their driving test) they must go back to provisional licence status. They will then be required to retake both their theory and practical tests again.
