Car Theft on the Increase

Car crime is on the increase as criminals use new technology to break into vehicles. The Association of British Insurers (ABI) says that insurance companies paid out a record £271 million theft claims from January to September 2018. That’s a massive 22% increase on the same period from last year.

Keyless Cars

Many modern cars now use cheerless technology. Malcolm Tarling, of the ABI, thinks that keyless technology is the main reason for the increase in car crime. They have recently started using “relay attacks.” This is where a handheld electronic device is used to unify the signal which is given off from the digital for from within a victim’s house. The Metropolitan police said,” This is mainly organised crime groups.”

Preventing Keyless Crime

Many households have a “keyholder” just near the front door. Even if your vehicle does not have keyless entry, the keys to your vehicle should not be hand near the front door. Thieves have been known to use a fishing rod with a magnet attached to it. This is then used to fish the keys and to start the engine. Car keys, as well as house keys, should not be hand anywhere near the front door. If possible avoid putting them near any windows either. The technology used to extend the signal from a keyless key fob does not have a very high range. If keys are kept away from the front door and windows, these thieves will not be able to access your vehicle.
