Police Cameras to Spot Bad Driving Behaviour

Gloucestershire Police Force has started to use a mobile camera which can detect dangerous drivers from a kilometre away. If the police force is successful, it will look to work with other forces in the UK. It also aims to work alongside the Motor Insurance Bureau and the DVSA to explore other avenues.

Why the New Camera

Currently, the automatic camera’s only detect speeding motorist. Furthermore, drivers often slow down suddenly when they spot a speed camera. This can actually be more dangerous than speeding itself. The technology in the new camera produces high-quality video footage and also photographs vehicles and the driver’s behaver. The camera will detect tailgating, speeding, driving without a seatbelt. The camera can even photograph drivers using a hand-held mobile phone.

Police and Crime Commissioner

Martin Surl, Gloucestershire Police and Crime Commissioner hope the new camera will change driver behaviour. He said, “The aim is not just to penalise motorist but to uphold the law by creating a change in driver behaviour”

New Drivers Act 1995

According to the New Drivers act 1995, a drivers licence will be cancelled (revoked) if they get 6 or more points within 2 years of passing your test. If your license is cancelled, you will have to apply and pay for a new provisional licence. Furthermore,  you will have to retake and pass both your theory and driving test again.
