Automatic Vs Manual Cars

When a person makes a decision that they will learn to drive, will also have to decide whether they want to learn a manual or an automatic car. So which is better, automatic or manual? The question is old as motoring itself.

What’s the Difference Between an automatic car and a manual?

A manual car has three-foot pedals consisting of an accelerator, brake and a clutch. It also has a gearstick. In order to change gears, the driver needs to come off the accelerator pedal, press the clutch pedal down, change the appropriate gear, slowly release the clutch pedal and then back onto the accelerator. An automatic car will do this automatically, even without the driver realising.

Benefits of an Automatic Car

An automatic car is obviously easier to drive. With this in mind, it will be easier and quicker to pass the driving test in an automatic. The learner driver can focus his or her attention on the road procedure and hazard awareness rather than having to change gears. Automatic gearboxes offer a seamless transition between gears and therefore a more comfortable drive. Driving an automatic car is less stressful in the rush-hour traffic. It can become a chore to constantly pump the clutch pedal.

Drawbacks of an Automatic Car

The main disadvantage of an automatic car is that it is more expensive. And the new automatic car will cost around £2000 more than a manual car. Unfortunately, they also like more fuel. For this reason, driving lessons in an automatic car are usually a pound or two dearer than manual driving lessons. The automatic car can get boring to drive after a while as there is no much to do. If you pass a driving test in an automatic, you will be restricted to driving automatics only. In order to drive manual cars, you will need to retake your driving test in a manual car.

Advantages of a Manual Car

A manual car will give you greater control and you can choose which gear to select. This is particularly helpful in the winter. Furthermore, you can usually accelerate faster in a manual car. Manual cars are cheaper to buy and run than automatic cars. Repairs tend to be significantly cheaper.

Disadvantages of a Manual car

The constant pressing of the clutch pedal can give the driver leg pain, especially if you drive in congested areas. They cannot be driven on an automatic licence. Learning to drive a manual car is harder than an automatic.
