Driving Tests around the World

Taking a driving test can be a nail-biting experience. The British driving test is by no means an easy one.  Over half the learner drivers who take their driving test in the UK will fail. It is according to the DVSA figures. However, the UK government still believe that the driving test is not tough enough. With a fifth of the road gets in Britain involving a young person aged between 17 and 25, the government is proposing changes. These changes will include a curfew for new drivers between the hours of 10 PM and 5 AM. In this blog, we take a look at how the British driving test compares to the rest of the world.

The Easiest Place to Pass a Driving Test

Mexico

Mexico is the easiest place to obtain your driving licence in the world. Applicants for a driving licence in Mexico do not have to take a driving test. Simply required to sign a declaration confirming that they can drive. A driver can obtain a full Mexican driving licence for a £28. It probably due to this reason that there are 16,000 deaths on the roads of Mexico.

Pakistan

Pakistan is the second easiest place in the word to take to get a drivers licence. Candidates must take a theory and short practical driving test. However, these can be taken on the same day and the relatively easy. You simply drive through a short track with some codes and then you are required to reverse back for a few metres. Due to Pakistans large population, it has twice as many deaths on the road as Mexico.

The Hardest Place to Pass a Driving Test

Finland is the hardest country to obtain a driving licence. In Finland, the learner must first get a provisional license after passing a two-part exam in summer and winter respectively. After the two years, the driver must go through nineteen theory lessons and the practical lesson of learning how to drive in icy and slippery conditions.

Furthermore, Learner drivers in Finland must complete a course of driving instruction which is split into three separate sections.  This consists of basic instructions, practice and advanced. The learner driver needs to complete the first stage before they can book the theory and practical driving test.

The Most Expensive Driving Licence

Hong Kong is the most expensive place in the world to learn to drive. It cost over £50 just to apply for a provisional driving licence. And there are the driving lessons which will cost you £100 per hour. The Government of Hong Kong recommends that learner drivers take at least 30 hours of professional driving tuition before applying for a driving test. This alone will learner driver £3000.

The UK Driving Test

In the UK the learner drivers must pass a theory test and a practical driving test before obtaining their licence. The theory test is split into two sections,  choice and the hazard perception section. There is no minimum number of lessons required in order to take the driving test. However, the UK government does recommend that learner drivers take at least 40 hours of professional tuition plus additional practice with friends and relatives. Unfortunately, many learner drivers do not follow this advice and hence the failure rate is over 50%.
