Watford is a city and constituency in Hertfordshire, England, located 15 miles north-west of central London, on the River Colne. Originally a small market town, the Grand Junction Canal encouraged the building of mills, printing works, and beer halls. Although the industries declined in Watford, its proximity to London and its transportation links attracted a number of companies to locate their headquarters in the town.

Cassiobury Park is a public park which was once a manor house owned by the Earls of Essex. The town developed beside the River Colne, on land owned by St Albans Abbey. In the 12th century, a charter was granted to permit the establishment of a market, and construction began on St Marys Church. The town grew in part because travellers went to Berkhamsted Castle and Kings Langley Royal Palace.

A palace was built in the 16th century in Cassiobury. This was partially rebuilt in the 17th century, with another suburban home built in The Grove. The Great Junction Canal in 1798 and the London and Birmingham railway in 1837 led to Watfords rapid growth, and the paper-making mills, such as those operated by John Dickinson in Croxley, affected the towns growth of printing. Two breweries, Benskins and Sedgwicks, amalgamated and prospered in the town until they closed at the end of the 20th century. Hertfordshire County Council has designated Watford as its main sub-regional hub.

Several main offices are located in Watford. International conferences and sporting events have also taken place at Watford, including the 2006 World Golf Championship, the 2013 Bilderberg conference, and the 2019 NATO Summit, which were held in The Grove. Watford became a township by virtue of the Local Government Act 1894, and a borough by virtue of granting charters in 1922. The borough, with 90,301 residents as of the 2011 census, is separated from Greater London in the south by Three Rivers district. Watford Borough Council is the local authority, with the Mayor of Watford as its leader, one of 18 directly elected mayors in England and Wales.
