Sutton Coldfield, or Sutton Royal town, known locally as Sutton. It is a town and civic ward of the city of Birmingham, West Midlands, England. The town is approximately eight miles north-east of Birminghams urban centre, nine miles south of Lichfield, seven miles south-west of Tamworth, and seven miles east of Walsall. Sutton Coldfield and the surrounding suburbs are administered by the Birmingham City Council for local government purposes, but the town has its own Town Council, which manages the town and surrounding areas, running local services and electing the Mayor of the Council. Historically part of Warwickshire, it became part of Birmingham and West Midlands Metropolitan Borough in 1974.

The first known evidence for human habitation at Sutton Coldfield was discovered on the edge of the town during 2002-2003. Archaeological surveys undertaken to prepare the construction of the M6 tollway revealed evidence for bronze age burning pits, located next to Langley Mill Farm, at the mouth of the Langley Brook. In addition, evidence was discovered for a Bronze Age burial mound, one of just two found in Birmingham, with the other located at Kingstanding. Excavations also revealed the existence of an Iron Age settlement, dating from about 400 and 100 BC, comprising round houses built in at least three phases, enclosed by ditches.

Closer to Langley Brook (a tributary to the Tame), excavations revealed the remains of a single circular house, also surrounded by ditches, dating to the same period. Near to Langley Mill Farm are the Fox Hollies, where archaeological surveys uncovered New Stone Age-era flint. Amongst the finds in this area are cores of flints, and a scraper made of flint that has been touched up with a knife. The presence of the flint cores suggests the site was used to make tools, and a settlement was near. In addition, the site has also yielded Bronze Age burning mounds.
