Staines-on-Thames is a market town in northwestern Surrey, about 17 miles (27 km) west of the centre of London. It is within Spelthorne Borough, on the confluence between the Thames and River Colne. Historically part of Middlesex, the town was transferred to Surrey in 1965. Staine is near to Heathrow airport, and is connected to the national motorway network via the M25 and M3. The first evidence for human activity in the area is Paleolithic, while in the Neolithic period, a causeway enclosure was located at Staines Moor.
The first bridge over the River Thames in Staines is thought to have been built by Romans, and a settlement existed in the area around modern High Street from the late 1st century CE. Throughout the Middle Ages, Staines was mostly an agricultural settlement, with a seat held by Westminster Abbey. The first surviving records of the market are from 1218, but it was probably held in an area around St. Marys church during the Anglo-Saxon period. Staines industrialisation began in the mid-17th century, with the establishment of the Thomas Ashby Brewery in the town. Improvements in the local transportation network during the mid-19th century also encouraged the growth of the local population.
The present-day Staines Bridge, designed by George Rennie, was opened by William IV in 1832, while the first railway line across the Staines opened in 1848. The town became a center for the production of linoleum in 1864, when Frederick Walton established a mill at the site of Hale Hall, which dates from the 13th century. In the late 20th century, Staine became notorious as the hometown of Ali G, a fictional character from films and TV. Although many locals felt the towns reputation suffered due to the characters association, Sacha Baron Cohen, Ali Gs creator, has praised Staine as being “a nice, leafy, middle-class suburb…where the swans float beneath the pretty bridges”. . In part as a reaction to the characters, the Spelthorne borough council voted in December 2011 to add the suffix “after-Thames” to the name.
