St Albans is a cathedral town in Hertfordshire, England, just east of Hemel Hempstead and just west of Hatfield, and is 20 miles (32 km) north-west of London, eight miles (13 km) south-west of Welwyn Garden City, and eleven miles (18 km) south-east of Luton. St Albans was the first large city along the ancient Roman Watling Street route for travellers heading north, becoming the Roman town of Verulamium.
It is in the commuter belt to London, and the built-up Greater London area. St Albans is named after Alban, Britains first Saint. The best-explained version of his history, the Bedes Church History of the People of England, tells of him living at Verulamium, at some point during the third or fourth century, during the time of Christian persecution.
Alban met a Christian priest who was escaping from his persecutors, and took him into his home, where he became so impressed by the piety of the priest that he converted to Christianity. When authorities searched Albans home, he donned a priests mantle and presented himself instead of his host.
He was then condemned to suffer the penalties to be meted out to the priest, unless he gave up Christianity. Alban refused, and was taken to the execution. In later legends, after the execution, his head rolls downhill, with a well rising up from where it stopped.
