Southall is one of the seven major towns in The London Borough of Ealing and is a large suburban district of West London. It is 10.7 miles west of Charing Cross. Southall is generally divided into three parts; the most residential area around is ady Margaret Road is (Dormers Wells), the main commercial center at the High Street and Southall Broadway (this is part of the Greater Uxbridge Road and last but not least Old Southall or known as Southall Green to the south which consists of Southall Railway Station Norwood Green bounded by the M4.
It is located on The Grand Union Canal – this canal was one of the first canals that linked London with the rest of the growing canal system. In the 1950s, this was one of the last canals which was used to carry significant commercial traffic – this is still open to traffic and is still used today. The canal separates it from Hayes on the west, the east of the River Brent separates the town from Hanwell.
Southall gradually became home to the largest Punjabi community and is known for it major South Asian culture. Due to this reason, it gained a nickname and is also known as Little India.
The average UK Pass Rate stands at 45.9%. However, if you are located in the London Area this decreases to 40.8%. The table below shows pass rates for Southall. for the las fiver years.
2015-16 | 2016-17 | 2017-18 | 2018-19 | 2019-20 |
37.9% | 41.6% | 39.4% | 40.1% | 40.4% |
Overall, Southall Test Center is not the worst center to have your test, although their pass rates are not much lower than Greater London. We understand why learners, instructors and examiners might be interested in pass rates – but do not focus all of your attention on the pass rates as that does not play a part in you passing your driving test – you DO!
Reading the Number Plate
Having checked your identity documents, the examiner will ask you to read a number plate from a distance of 20 metres. If you wear glasses to read the number plate, they must be worn throughout the test. Furthermore, after passing the test, your licence will be marked as only valid if glasses are worn.
Show Me – Tell Me Questions
Part of the driving test involves answering two vehicle safety questions, commonly known as the “show me – tell me questions” You will be asked the “tell me question” at the beginning of the test before driving off. The “show me question” will be asked during the test itself. If you get the one or even both questions wrong, this will be marked as a minor error and you will not fail the test.
Independent Drive
The independent drive takes up half of the driving test at Southall . It is not an opportunity for you to program the sat-nav for the beach, put on the cruise control, and head off wherever you like. The examiner can ask you to follow road signs and road markings to a set destination or ask to follow directions given by a satnav. The independent drive is a bit different to normal driving. Let’s say you’re doing a semi intensive crash course with DTC, your instructor will say, “at the roundabout, turn right.” Immediately, you know that you are approaching a roundabout. You also know that you need to start the MSM routine. However, in the independent driving section of the practical test, you will need to identify that you are approaching a roundabout and then you need to decide when to start the Mirror, Signal & Manoeuvre routine.
Reverse Manoeuvres
During your semi intensive driving course at Southall, you will be taught to reverse safely with due regard to other road users. There are four manoeuvres you will learn during your crash driving course. However, in the actual driving test, the examiner will choose one of them. The four manoeuvres include parallel parking, stopping on the right-hand side of the road and then reversing back, reversing into a bay, and finally driving forward into a bay and then reversing back.
