Solihull is a market town and the administrative centre for the wider Solihull Metropolitan Borough, West Midlands, England. The population of the town was 123,187 at the 2011 census. The wider area of Solihull had a population of 214,909 at the 2011 Census. Solihull is largely urban itself; the wider borough, however, is rural in character, with a number of rural villages, while three-quarters of the borough is designated a Green Belt.

The city has roots dating from the first century BCE, further formalised in the medieval period of British history. Today, the town is famous for being, amongst others, the home of the Land Rover motor brand, home of the British Equestrian Eventing Team, and is considered to be one of the UKs most prosperous areas.

Solihulls name is generally thought to derive from the location of its Arden Stone Parish Church, St. Alphonge, on an earthy hill. The church is built into the hillside of hard red marl, which turns into gooey mud during damp weather. The land that is now Solihull was once covered by the old Arden Forest.

The first known settlement in the area was in Berry Mound, Shirley, the site of the Iron Age hillfort, a hillfortified village protected by earthen banks, dating from the first century BC, which covered about 11 acres (4.5 ha). The name Shirley means bright glade or rim glade within Arden Forest.

In later Iron Age times, the river Coer, from which the river Blythe flows, is thought to have been a frontier between the Korieltauvi and Cornovii, with Solyhull being a meeting point of these two strong Celtic tribes. Throughout Roman occupation in Britain, no Roman roads are thought to have passed through the Arden Forest, as it was so thick. The closest known large Roman settlements were Coleshill, at the edge of Solihull, Metchley Fortress (about 8.5 miles northwest) and Alcester (about 15 miles south).
