Slough is joined into the heart of the UK transport and communications network, it is located between the M4, M40 & the M25. Slough also has very good rail links that can take you into the center of London and also has other links on where you can travel through the rest of the country and in the heart of Europe. It is located in the south east of England and is very close to West London.
The town is very successful and well known due to it having fast communication links – for example, Slough is near two of the most busiest airports in the world which are Heathrow Airport & Gatwick Airport. It is a 10 minute drive to Heathrow Airport and a 45 minutes drive to Gatwick Airport. It is a 20 minute journey from Slough to Paddington Station which is based in Central London. There are also fast link trains nearby from Paddington, that can take you to the rest of Europe and the UK.
The town itself has direct access to the M4 Motorway and to the East lies London – which is only a short trip away from Slough. It is also very well known for its shopping center known as Queensmere Shopping Center, where people have access to everything such as fashion stores, phone repair and phone stores alongside fast-food areas and nail salons.
Did you know that the current national average pass rate in UK stands at 45.9%? As for those in London, this is lower and stands at 40.8%. For those taking their practical at Slough test center, you can see averages from the last five years below.
2015-16 | 2016-17 | 2017-18 | 2018-19 | 2019-20 |
46.7% | 45.1% | 44.4% | 43.7% | 43.0% |
Slough pass rates, are just below the national average so there is not much to complain about here. Even if any test center had a pass rate of 85%, that does not mean that you are guaranteed a pass. It all depends on how much effort you are willing to put in and how hard you are willing to work, as that is the only thing that can help you pass your driving test.
Document Checks
On the day of the driving test, It’s important that you take your provisional driving licence to the test as the examiner will need to check that it is valid. You will not need to take your theory certificate as the examiner will be able to check it on the system. Slough driving test center occasionally starts at 7.13 am when the examiner may not have access to the checking system. It is therefore advisable to have your certificate number just in case.
Reading the Number Plate
Having checked your identity documents, the examiner will ask you to read a number plate from a distance of 20 metres. If you wear glasses to read the number plate, they must be worn throughout the test. Furthermore, after passing the test, your licence will be marked as only valid if glasses are worn.
Show Me – Tell Me Questions
Part of the driving test involves answering two vehicle safety questions, commonly known as the “show me – tell me questions” You will be asked the “tell me question” at the beginning of the test before driving off. The “show me question” will be asked during the test itself. If you get the one or even both questions wrong, this will be marked as a minor error and you will not fail the test.
However, a few drivers at the Slough test center have been known to fail on the show me questions, not for not knowing the answer, not for losing control of the vehicle while trying to show the examiner the answer. If you forget a particular control, it is better to admit it to the examiner rather than try to bluff it.
The Emergency Stop
Learning the emergency stop is an important part of your intensive driving lessons in Slough. However, in the actual practical test only one in three candidates will be asked to carry out the emergency stop.
The purpose of this exercise is to demonstrate that you can stop suddenly but safely. The examiner will tell you a few minutes in advance that you will be carrying out the emergency stop. The words used by the examiner will be, “ ‘Shortly, I shall ask you to carry out an emergency stop. I will raise my right hand as a signal and shout, Stop. When I shout Stop, I would like you to stop promptly as if a child had stepped in front of you.”
You need to drive normally before the emergency stop. Do not accelerate suddenly to build up a good speed and on the other hand, do not purposely drive slow in anticipation of the emergency stop. Many learner drivers who fail on this exercise often do so out of fear, driving slowly, believing it would be easier, or failing to make proper observations after the emergency stop.
