Sileby is a former industrial village and civic parish, located in the Soar valley of Leicestershire, between Leicester and Loughborough. Nearby villages include Barrow-on-Soar, Mountsorrel, Ratcliffe-on-the-Wreake, Seagrave, and Cossington. The civil parish had a population of 7,835 in the 2011 census.

The origins of the village can be traced to about AD840, when the area was settled by the Danes: Leicestershire formed part of the Danelaw, together with other counties nearby. The name Sileby may actually derive from the Danish name of Sighulf. The village lies at the base of an ancient valley created by the nearby river Soar, meaning surrounding farmland is especially susceptible to flooding in periods of sustained or heavy rainfall.

Traditionally, Sileby was divided into two parishes, separated by the stream running down the centre of the village. These were St. Marys in the north, and St. Gregorys in the south. Recently, though, due to changes by the Boundary Commission, the third parish, Barrow West, has been added, although this is an arbitrary boundary, mostly for the purposes of elections.

This dividing was bitterly resented at the time, due to the rivalry between locals, and the idea of annexed part of the borough was unpopular. In practice, though, the division was mostly ignored. The idea of the two traditional parishes has also been lost to some extent, with villages growing larger and newer people moving in, not knowing of the importance of historical separations.

One of Silebys most distinctive features is St. Marys Anglican Church, founded circa 1152. It is a Grade II* listed building, with just 4 per cent of listed buildings in the country being grade II*, meaning that it is very much a feature.

The Gothic tower is now home to a beautiful 10 bell ring, attracting bell-ringers from all over. The church has a lively congregation, and hosts ladies fellowship Tuesday afternoons, and squeals for the little ones on Thursday mornings. There is an active youth ministry and a childs work led by Leonie Poole, the child and family worker.

The church is open for coffee starting at 2pm Wednesday. The vicar is the Vicar of The Parish, Duncan Bates. Sunday services are held at 11am, with childrens and youth groups in a modern Saint Marys centre. There is also a nursery at the main church building.

Sileby Primitive Methodist church was built in 1866, by James Kerridge. The church of Sileby Wesleyan Methodists in the High Street was built in 1884. In recent history, Sileby has been a very industrial town. Like most towns/villages in the surrounding area, until the 1980s, it had several hosiery and footwear factories, along with a wallpaper maker, and a number of engineering firms. Almost all these are now gone, with much of the factories premises having been demolished and replaced with new housing estates, making it in essence a modern commuter town for those working across the East Midlands, and indeed further afield, with easy access to London and the north.
