Sheffield is a town in South Yorkshire, England, and serves as the administrative centre for the city of Sheffield. The name is derived from the Sheaf river, which runs through the city.

It was historically part of the West Riding of Yorkshire, with a number of its southern outskirts transferred to the City Council from Derbyshire. It is the largest settlement in the south Yorkshire region. The town is situated at the east foothills of the Pennines, in the Don Valley, which has four tributaries: Loxley, Porter Brook, the River Wear, and Sheaf.

Sixty-one percent of the whole area of Sheffield is open land, with one-third of the city inside the National Park in the Peak District. The city has over 250 parks, woods and gardens, estimated to hold about 4.5 million trees. The city is six miles (9.7 km) south-west of Rotherham, 40 miles (64 km) east of Manchester, 38 miles (61 km) south of Leeds, and 44 miles (71 km) north of Nottingham.

Sheffield played an integral part in the industrial revolution, and the city has developed a number of important inventions and technologies. In the 19th century, the city saw an enormous expansion in its traditional smelting industries, as Stainless Steel and Crucible Steel were developed locally, contributing to an increase of nearly tenfold. Sheffield received a township charter in 1843, becoming the City of Sheffield in 1893. International competition for iron and steel caused a drop-off in those industries during the 1970s and 1980s, coinciding with a coal miner collapsing in the region.

Yorkshires counties became counties of their own in 1889, with the County of the West of Yorkshire being disbanded in 1974. The town later became part of South Yorkshire County; it has been made up of separate unitary authorities since 1986.

The 21st century has seen a large amount of regeneration of Sheffield, which is consistent with that in other British cities. Sheffields Gross Value Added (GVA) has increased 60% since 1997, reaching PS11.3bn in 2015. The economy has enjoyed sustained growth, with an average annual rate of about 5%, higher than that in the wider region of Yorkshire and the Humber.

Sheffield had a population of 518,090 at the 2011 census, making it the second-largest city in the Yorkshire and the Humber region. The Sheffield built-up area, of which the Sheffield Sub-Division is the largest, has a population of 685,369, which also includes the town of Rotherham. The district, governed by the City, had a population of 584,853 at a mid-2019 estimate, making it Englands third-most populous borough.

It is one of eleven British cities which form the core cities group. In 2011, there were 490,070 people living in an unaffected borough.
