Selly Oak is a business and residential district of South West Birmingham, England. The area is named after Selly Oak Ward, and includes the surrounding areas: Bournbrook, Selly Park, and Ten Acres. The neighbouring wards of Edgbaston and Harborne are to the north of the Bournbrook, which was formerly the county boundary, while the southern areas are Weoley, and Bournville. A ward council serves four wards, Selly Oak, Billesley, Bournville, and Brandwood. The same wards make up Birminghams Selly Oak constituency, represented since 2010 by Steve McCabe (Labour).

Selly Oak is connected to Birmingham by Pershore Road (A441) and the Bristol Road (A38). The Worcester & Birmingham Canal and the Birmingham Cross-City railway line pass through the local district centre. The 2001 Population Census recorded that Selly Oak had 25,792 residents, resulting in a population density of 4,236 per km2, in comparison to the population density of 3,649 per km2 in Birmingham.

It has 15.9% of its population made up of minorities, compared to 29.6% for Birmingham as a whole. As Birmingham University is close by, the area has many students.

Two tornadoes touched down in Birmingham on November 23, 1981, part of the nationwide record-breaking tornado outbreak on that date. The second tornado, rated an F1/T2 tornado, touched down at approximately 2 pm local time at Selly Oak, with a few injuries and some damages in southern suburbs of Birmingham.

In the late 20th century, the Bristol Road (A38) was undergoing a widening programme. Many heritage buildings, including Birmingham Battery and Metal Works offices and the Westley Richards gun factory, were demolished. However, plans for major regeneration in the area were confirmed in 2005, and in August 2011, a new 1.5-mile (2.4 mi) stretch of road was opened, accessing Birminghams new Queen Elizabeth Hospital. The works involved building an aerial aqueduct for carrying the Worcester and Birmingham Canal, as well as the rail crossing for the Cross-City line. This scheme has led the way in improving the Battery retail park complex, with many high street regular shops opening up shops.
