Rickmansworth is a small town in south-west Hertfordshire, England, approximately 17 miles north-west of Central London, within the perimeter of the M25 motorway. The town is mostly north of the Grand Union Canal (formerly the Grand Junction Canal) and the River Colne. The city of Watford is five miles (8 km) northeast. Rickmansworth is the administrative seat of the Three Rivers District Council. The meeting place for the Chess and River Gade at Rickmansworth, together with the River Colne, inspired the districts name.

The enlarged Colne flows southwards, to form the main branch of the Thames. The city is served by London Underground Metropolitan Lines, as well as by Chiltern Railways, running from London Marylebone to Aylesbury. A settlement existed in this part of the Colne valley during the Stone Age.

Rickmansworth was one of the five manors that were granted to the large monastery at St Albans in 793, when it was founded by King Offa. Local tithes supported the abbey, which provided clergy for peoples services until the abbeys dissolution in 1539. Around the time of Domesday book, “Prichemareworth” probably had a population of around 200.
