Quinton, is a housing estate and ward in Birmingham, England, located slightly less than five miles (8 km) to the west of the city centre. Formerly part of the Halesowen Parish, Quinton became a part of Birmingham in 1909. Quinton was a village, with surrounding land being agricultural, until the 1930s, when the first housing estates were developed. Most farmland had been built over by 1980, but a bit of rural character remains, in the form of the Woodgate Valley Country Park. Alongside Bartley Green, Harborne and Edgbaston, Quanton is part of Birminghams Edgbaston constituency.
The name Quinton is thought to be from the word Qweningtun, meaning Queens Settlement. Quinton was previously part of the old parish of Halesowen, and was held in large part during the Middle Ages by a wealthy monastery in the town of Lapal, next to Halesowen. In the 1840s, while called The Quinton, there were references to the existence of two small coal pits in the area, and to residents being employed in nail making. The parish was commonly known as Ridgacre before 1901, and formed, along with much of Halesowen parish, a separate part of Shropshire, until 1844, when it was transferred to Worcestershire. The parish developed alongside the roads from Kidderminster to Birmingham, which were turnpikes.
Data from the 1881 census shows that farming and the building trade were the two highest paid professions by men, while the highest paid professions by women were domestic services and making nails.
Prior to the M5 motorway, Quintons northern west boundary extended more than 250 metres (820 feet) to the west.
Where the Chantry Drive housing estate is today, the Primitive Methodist, Bourne College stood on its 19 acres (7.7 ha) site. The College, a residential school for boys, was built in 1882, named for one of Primitive Methodisms co-founders, Hugh Bourne. Hoosen Close is named for the colleges sole Headmaster. The college closed in 1928, and from 1931, the building was used as an old-age home known as Quinton Hall. The Hall was demolished in 1978.
