Prestwich is a city in Bury Metropolitan Borough, Greater Manchester, England, located 3.3 miles (5.3 km) north of Manchester City Centre, 3.1 miles (5 km) north of Salford, and 4.7 miles (7.6 km) south of Bury. Historically part of Lancashire, Prestwich is the seat of the Ancient Parish of Prestwich-cum-Oldham, within the hundred of Salfordshire.
The church of St Mary the Virgin a Grade I listed building has been the focus of the community for centuries. The older parts of Prestwich, around the Bury New Road, are known as Prestwich Village. Prestwich has a large Jewish community, which, along with nearby Whitefield, Cheetham Hill, Crumpsall, and Broughton Park, forms the second largest community in Britain.
Prestwich is probably Old English, from the words preost and wic, translated as the shepherds field. Another possible derivation is a priests retreat. Wic is an element of the place-name, from Latin vicus, location. Its most common sense is a dairy farm.
The parish is recorded as variously Prestwich in 1194, Prestwich in 1202, and Prestwich in 1203. Bury New Road follows the approximate route of the Roman road linking the Mamucium (Manchester) and Bremetennacum (Ribchester) hillforts. It is possible a Roman hillfort or camp was built on “Castle Hill”, close to the border with Salford, which would have been mirroring an encampment on Raynesough Hill, which was about an equal distance away from the Roman road. John Booker, a 19th-century writer and curate at the parish church, suggested these were agricultural camps built to protect livestock kept in Broughton Woods and Colesal. The camps were situated “just off the Old Road at Bury, just across the Singleton Brook, on the very first field of Prestwich Parish, formerly known as Lowercastle”.
Roman coins were found outside the Bury New Road, close to the Prestwich Golf Course, and a few at the Prestwich Clough.
