Openshaw is a hamlet in the city centre of Manchester, England, approximately three miles (four kilometers) to the east. Historically part of Lancashire, Openshaw was annexed to Manchester City in 1890. Its name is derived from the Old English Opinschawe, meaning an open woodland or coppice.
During the Second Industrial Revolution, as Openshaw became a region of heavy industry, socialism and trade unionism thrived. In 1910, the Openshaw Socialists were formed; Keir Hardie, founder of the Labour Party, spoke at their first meeting. Annie Leigh became the first female Socialist Alderman in Manchester in 1936, having been Secretary of the Independent Labour Party of Openshaw since the 1890s. Openshaw is now a largely African-ethnic neighbourhood, and a diversity of shops and services has opened to reflect this fast-moving demographic shift.
There is little in terms of industry now in the ward. Very large industries, like a Government Munitions Factory (ordnance works) and related rail yards, closed after the First World War. Companies that employed thousands of men, but none remain, include RHM, Ferguson, Pailin & Co (later GEC Switchgear), English Steel Corporation, B&S Massey, and Crossley Brothers, as well as Gorton Works on the Manchester, Sheffield & Lincolnshire Railway, later Great Central Railway, followed by the London and North Eastern Railway. The Gorton Works illustrates an industry that sustained the economy of Openshaw and adjacent areas of Manchester throughout the second industrial revolution and beyond.
The first locomotive was built in 1858, and Gorton Works had built over 900 locomotives by 1923. The last steam locomotive was built for the British Rail Company in 1950. The works then produced electrically operated locomotives until they closed down in 1963.
The site is now the site of New Smithfield wholesale market, the Manchester wholesale produce market. However, Openshaw is part of the regeneration scheme for east Manchester, with new businesses moving to the area.
