Newbold-Verdon is a village and civic parish in the County of Leicestershire, England. The parish includes Newbold Heath in the north and Brascote in the south. Originally an agricultural centre, Newbold Wearne increased in size in the 1850s as the area expanded its coal-mining operations. This industry has now stopped leaving Newbold Verdon a commuter village, serving Leeds (9.5 miles to the east) and Hinkley (8.5 miles to the south).
The 2001 census recorded a population of 3,193, reducing to 3,012 in the 2011 census.
Newbold Weardon is situated on the B582 between the similarly-sized villages of Barlestone and Desford, and is four miles (6.4 km) east of the small market town of Market Bosworth. The Domesday book (1086) records this settlement as Newebold, meaning new-build. It acquired the surname Verdon from Nicholas de Verdon, who owned the manor in 1226. While the civic parish was Newbold-Verdon, the church parish retained the form of Newbold-de-Verdun.
Nicholass descendant, William de Ferrers, was born at Newbold in 1332 or 1333. In 1280, in a survey, Newbold, Brascote, Naneby, and Barleston responded as one parish, containing 80 acres of woods and vineyards. The manor was held by Walter de Vere in 1401 and was subsequently divided up through marriage into four parts, one of which went to Henry de Ferrars.
In the year of 1428, the village was quarantined because of a cholera epidemic, however, it was a brief stay, with the quarantine being lifted shortly after it was found that the epidemic was not severe. In 1625, Sir Thomas Crewe purchased the lands in Newbold, which were ultimately passed on to Nathaniel, then Lord Crewe, the Bishop of Durham. A portion of Newbold was enclosed in 1509, though the major enclosure took place in 1810, with the Church granted a land grant of 1,316 acres in glebes. Six cottages were built for the parishs poor in 1794, using benifit funds, and were also given the use of 10 acres of land at the time of the enclosure. Cob Cottage is likely to be the oldest surviving house, dating from the 1650s.
On Sunday, March 22, 2015, King Richard IIIs funeral procession passed by Market Bosworth, Newbold Verdon and Desford en route to his burial at Leicester Cathedral.
