Maidenhead is a market town in the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead, Berkshire, England, situated on the south-western side of the Thames. It has an estimated population of 70,374 people, and forms part of the boundary with south Buckinghamshire. The town is located 27 miles west of Charing Cross, London, and 13 miles east-northeast of the County Borough of Reading. The town is distinct from the constituency of Maidenhead, the Parliamentary constituency which includes a number of outlying suburbs and villages (including parts of Wokingham and Reading) such as Twyford, Charvil, Remenham, Ruscombe and Wargrave.
The archaeologist John Leland claimed the area surrounding Maidenheads current town centre was a small Roman settlement called Alaunodunum. He claimed it had almost disappeared at the end of the Roman occupation. Although he is not known to his sources, there is documented and physical evidence for Roman settlements at the site.
There are two known sites of a villa in the town, one is located on Cox Greene, in the outskirts, the other is located on Castle Hill, to the west of the city centre. This villa is situated on the route of the Camlet Way, a Roman road linking Silchester (Calleva Atrebatum) to Colchester (Camulodunum) by way of St Albans (Verulamium) and passing the current centre of the city. Remnants of the road have been excavated in several places around it, but its exact route is uncertain.
The Maidenhead name derives from a location on the banks of the river, which was home to the first “new docks” or “Maidenhytes”, built in the early days of Saxon times. In 870, the Kingdom of Wessex was invaded by a Danish army. They landed from longboats on quays and ferry landings in Maidenhead, and made their way by land to Reading, where they made camp and made it a base for their regional power. The area of the current city centre was initially a small Anglo-Saxon town known as “South Ellington”.
The town was probably developed along the Camlet Way at the site of Alaunodunum, since the Bath road was not rebuilt before the 13th century. Maidenhead is recorded in Domesday Book as a settlement at Ellington, within the Beynhurst hundred.
