Longford has a population of 10 088 according to the 2016 Census. It is the largest city in the county, with approximately a third of the population in the county living there.

Longford lies at the junction of the National Main Route roads N4 and N5 in Ireland, meaning that traffic travelling between Dublin and County Mayo, or northern County Roscommon, passes through the town. Longford Railway Station, on the Dublin-Sligo line, is used extensively by commuters. The town was built on the headland at a crossing of the Camlin (from the Irish: Camlinn, meaning curving basin), a tributary of the Shannon.

According to multiple sources, Longfords name is Anglicisation of Irish longphort, meaning a hillfort or defended home. The region came under the influence of a local clan that controlled the southern and central parts of the county of Longford (historically called the Anaghailes or the Annalies), and so the town was known as Longfort Ui Fhearghail (Longfort/stronghold OFarrell).

A Dominican Priory was established there in the 1400s. St. Johns Church in Ireland (formerly known as Templemichael Parish Church) was built in 1710 on the site of the priory.
