Leatherhead is a small town in the Mole Valley area of Surrey, England, approximately 17 miles (27 km) south of central London. The settlement developed near the quays of the River Mole, which is thought to have given rise to its name.
In the Late Anglo-Saxon period, Leatherhead was a royal vill, and was first mentioned in a charter by Alfred the Great in 880 CE. The first bridge over the Wear was probably built in about 1200, which might coincide with expansion of the town and a larger parish church. For most of its history, Leatherhead was an agricultural settlement, with a weekly market held before the middle Elizabethan period.
The building of turnpike roads in the mid-18th century, and the arrival of a railway in the latter part of the 19th century, attracted newcomers and began stimulating the local economy. Large-scale manufacturing industries arrived after the end of the first world war, with companies having factories in the town including Ronson and Goblin vacuum cleaners. Several organisations working with the disabled also opened treatments and training facilities, including the Royal School for the Blind, the Queen Elizabeths Trust, and the Society of the Former Servicemens Association. Towards the end of the 20th century, Leatherheads manufacturing industry began to wane, with the town instead beginning to attract employers from the services industry. Former industrial areas were converted into business parks, attracting multi-national companies including Esso and Unilever.
A controversial regeneration in the city centre took place in the early 1980s, including the building of The Swan centre. The works, which also included the pedestrianisation of the main shopping district, was widely blamed for a drop in the local retail economy. In 2002, the BBC identified Leatherhead as having one of the worst high streets in England,[citation needed] but by 2007, local print described the town centre as “buzzing”.
